ST. LOUIS: In a dramatic Monday night clash at Busch Stadium, the Philadelphia Phillies held off a furious late-inning rally by the St. Louis Cardinals to secure a 6-5 victory.
The contest featured high-stakes drama on both sides: Philadelphia right-hander Andrew Painter flirted with history by taking a no-hit bid deep into the sixth inning, while utility star Edmundo Sosa provided the offensive spark with a crucial three-RBI performance against his former team. Slugging designated hitter Kyle Schwarber continued his torrid summer pace, reaching base four times, while Alan Rangel and the Philadelphia pitching staff navigated a late St. Louis push to seal the win.
With the victory, Philadelphia improves to 64-56 on the 2026 season, claiming their second straight victory and seventh win in their last ten outings. For St. Louis, the narrow defeat drops them to 59-60, marking their second loss in three games despite an eighth-inning comeback effort that brought the home crowd to its feet.
Early Sparks and St. Louis Missteps Give Phils Early Cushion
The Phillies established early control in the top of the second inning, taking advantage of defensive missteps by Cardinals starter Hunter Dobbins.
Brandon Marsh sparked the rally with a sharp single up the middle. Marsh advanced to second and later scored the game’s opening run when Dobbins committed a costly throwing error on an infield exchange. Capitalising on the momentum, Edmundo Sosa stepped up to the plate and delivered a sharp RBI single to right field, scoring Marsh to extend Philadelphia’s lead to 2-0.
Dobbins settled down temporarily over the next two frames, utilising a heavy sinker to induce groundouts. Still, Philadelphia’s potent top-of-the-order broke through again in the top of the fifth. Kyle Schwarber—who entered the night leading the National League with 35 home runs—led off with a lined single. Following a walk by Bryce Harper and a fielder’s choice from Bryson Stott, Schwarber came around to score on a wild pitch, giving Philadelphia a comfortable 3-0 cushion.
Dobbins (2-3) finished his night after five innings, allowing three runs (just one earned) on four hits and three walks while striking out six. While the rookie right-hander battled hard to keep St. Louis within striking distance, the defensive blunder in the second inning proved to be a heavy burden against a deep Phillies lineup.
Andrew Painter Flirts with History at Busch Stadium
While the offence provided early run support, the real headline of the night was 23-year-old right-hander Andrew Painter. Making his 12th start of the campaign after battling back from early-season hamstring tightness, Painter displayed electric command through the first five frames.
Utilising a high-90s four-seam fastball paired with a biting slider, Painter baffled the Cardinals’ hitters. St. Louis failed to put a runner on base via a hit through five full innings, managing only three walks against the towering young pitcher.
Painter’s no-hit bid carried into the bottom of the sixth, but fatigue began to take its toll after 85 pitches in the humid St. Louis night. With one out in the sixth, Cardinals catcher Iván Herrera worked a deep count before lacing an 89-mph cutter down the left-field line for a double, breaking up Painter’s no-hitter and reigniting the Busch Stadium crowd.
Cardinals slugger Alec Burleson followed immediately with a clutch two-run single to centre, scoring Herrera and cutting the Phillies’ lead to 3-2. That hit marked the end of Painter’s evening. Phillies manager Rob Thomson emerged from the dugout to relieve his starter after 93 pitches.
Painter (2-8) earned the win, finishing with a final stat line of 5.1 innings pitched, two earned runs, two hits, three walks, and six strikeouts.
Insurance Runs: Schwarber and Sosa Extend the Lead
With the Cardinals narrowing the gap to 3-2, Philadelphia’s veteran bats immediately went back to work in the late innings.
In the top of the seventh, backup catcher Garrett Stubbs drew a one-out walk against Cardinals reliever Caleb Ferguson. Schwarber then crushed a 1-1 slider off the right-centre field wall for an RBI double, driving in Stubbs to stretch the lead to 4-2. Schwarber’s multi-hit night complemented his plate discipline, as he reached base four times (single, double, two walks) to anchor the top of the order.
Philadelphia provided what seemed to be the decisive blow in the top of the eighth inning. With two runners aboard following singles by Nick Castellanos and Brandon Marsh, Edmundo Sosa stepped in against Cardinals reliever Ryan Fernandez. Sosa crushed a low sinker into the left-centre gap for a two-run double, driving home both runners and making it a 6-2 ballgame.
The three-RBI performance was Sosa’s most productive game at the plate since driving in five runs against the Washington Nationals back on June 23.
Cardinals Rally in the Eighth; Bowland Secures First Career Save
Refusing to go down quietly, St. Louis launched a furious comeback in the bottom of the eighth against the Philadelphia bullpen.
Alec Burleson ignited the rally with an RBI double to deep right field, scoring Lars Nootbaar. Shortstop Masyn Winn followed with a run-scoring single through the hole into left field, trimming the score to 6-4. Two batters later, infielder José Fermín delivered a clutch pinch-hit RBI single to centre, bringing home Winn and narrowing Philadelphia’s lead to a single run at 6-5.
Cardinals young star Jordan Walker kept his own momentum going by singling earlier in the game to extend his hitting streak to 10 games—marking his fourth separate streak of 10 or more games this season.
With the tying run on base in the eighth, the Phillies turned to right-hander Jonathan Bowland to extinguish the fire. Bowland induced an inning-ending pop-out from Brendan Donovan to protect the one-run lead. Bowland returned to pitch a clean ninth inning, striking out Lars Nootbaar and getting Iván Herrera to ground out to lock down the 6-5 victory for his first career save in four opportunities.
